Our story had some holes in it.

After immigrating to Canada in the early 1900’s, F.J. Neate (Frank, "Gumpy," originally from Wales) apprenticed in the coffee roasting trade and in 1945 started Neates Coffee. His wife, Ella (Isabella, "Granny," a telephone operator from Scotland), made donuts and together they pedaled deliveries of fresh coffee and donuts around Vancouver. 

Along the way to JJ Bean, coffee became the focus and the donuts were lost to family lore. We discussed introducing donuts for decades but it wasn’t until Sunwood Square opened in 2021 that possibility became reality. If we were going to do donuts, we had to do it right – it’s part of the original legacy, after all.

With the same meticulous attention to detail that has made JJ Bean Vancouver’s favourite and most trusted source for specialty coffee, we quietly refined our donuts until we were satisfied with the result. Our donuts are made fresh each morning and throughout the day, with real fruit and quality ingredients that Granny would recognize. We hope you enjoy all the hard work.
