Guatemala El Injerto Collection By Arturo Aguirre Sr. & Jr.

I. “El Tanque” Gold Reserve (227g / 8oz whole bean)

Tastes: Concentrated, juicy, cocoa, melon
Variety: Bourbon
Process: Washed & dry milled on site
Altitude: 1800 m
Region: Huehuetenango
Exporter: CAMEC

One of the highest quality coffees we have the privilege of roasting, and one of our most anticipated annual releases. “El Tanque” is a Bourbon microlot named after a small cement tank that collects rain water up at 1830 masl, one of the highest areas of the farm. The Bourbon trees at this altitude produce a coffee of intense concentration with complex melon notes that enhance the classic Guatemalan profile.

II. “SL28” Gold Reserve (227g / 8oz whole bean)

Tastes: Red currant, jammy, lively, complex
Variety: SL28
Process: Washed & dry milled on site
Altitude: 1740 m
Region: Huehuetenango
Exporter: CAMEC

Explores the interaction between a variety traditionally grown in Kenya when it is cultivated in Guatemalan terroir. This special variety is traditionally cultivated in Kenya. It was selected from a single tree by Scott Laboratories (hence “SL”) in 1935. SL28 is a more recent addition to El Injerto's portfolio, and showcases how a variety expresses itself differently in a novel terroir.

III. “Nativo” (340g / 12oz whole bean)

Tastes: Toasty, malty, sweet
Varieties: Bourbon & Catuaí
Process: Fully washed & sundried
Altitude: 1670 m
Region: Huehuetenango
Exporter: CAMEC

An essential component of our beloved, best-selling JJ espresso blend and rarely offered as a single origin coffee. Nativo is a blend of Catuai and Bourbon varieties. We use it as a major component in JJ for its balanced, malty flavours. It is the most classic “Guate” in the collection.

Order the Collection and you’ll also receive a tasting card and JJ Bean tote bag! Note: The “El Tanque” and “SL28” Gold Reserve coffees are a smaller half pound size to make the price more accessible for this special release.

We are super super excited to release a trilogy of coffees from the famed Finca El Injerto in Huehuetenango, Guatemala. These coffees are the fruit of our long relationship with the Aguirres, and more specifically, our visit to the farm in February of this year. In past years we’ve shared multiple offerings from El Injerto, but this time we are roasting and serving them “takeover” style so you can explore and enjoy them all at once — with a special tasting card with details about the farm, and a complimentary JJ tote bag!

At JJ Bean, we strive to honour people by roasting and serving exceptional and delicious coffee. We simply could not do what we do without the relationships we have with coffee producers, and exporters and importers. One of our longest standing farmer relationships has been with Arturo Aguirre Senior & Junior, the father and son behind Finca El Injerto in Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Under their leadership, El Injerto has become one of the most progressive and celebrated coffee farms in the world.

We pursued the Aguirres many years ago because of the amazing consistency of their coffees. This reliability prompted us to begin importing El Injerto coffees ourselves. The value of being able to depend on consistently excellent coffees year in and year out from them cannot be underestimated. Many members of the JJ Bean family have visited El Injerto for over a decade, including earlier this year during our Guatemala coffee origin trip, and the Aguirres have also visited us in Vancouver. We have many magical memories of times spent on the farm or over a meal. We are grateful to the Aguirres for supplying us with offerings that have helped to forge the essential character of JJ Bean coffee.

For more information about each individual coffee, check out the the line-up in our online shop.

Our free Thursday Cuppings will also feature all three coffees and highlights from our Guatemala Coffee Trip this year through this run, so checkout our cupping schedule!
